ATC Research

Solar Disinfection (SODIS) technology is apparently used for purification of drinking water among the rural poor communities of Uganda. Evidence of technology application is at the water school in Kisoro. ATC profiled the technology and found it to have the potential to provide a remedy for enhancing the safety of drinking water without reliance on wood fuel, expensive electricity and gas. This technology has largely remained unknown in most parts of the country. Effectiveness of SODIS can be comprised during rain season, due to fluctuations in sunshine and use of old scatched bottles. The ATC provides a guide to using and enhancing effectiveness of SODIS technology.  For training and guide information please contact the Centre.

ATC research indicated that Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) form the biggest part of the unserved when it comes to accessing safe water and sanitation. The gap was attributed partly to technical exclusion in form of inadquate designs of facilities. Based on this, the Centre in partnership with WaterAid and other stakeholders including National Union of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) Academic Institutions and  Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development (MGLSD) developed a Technical Guide for professionals and a catalogue providing a menu for stakeholders to strengthen the demand side. The Centre carries out trainings for different practioners on specific technologies and designing inclusive facilities.

Point of Use water Treatment Technologies:

Access to safe drinking water in Uganda is still a challenge. Even where people have piped water supply, the safe water chain is often compromised. Thus the need to promote Point of Use (PoU) water treatment. The best option would be boiling water for drinking however a relative population cannot afford to boil water for drinking thus the need to promote low cost water treatment alternatives. Based on this, the Appropriate Technology Centre for Water and Sanitation (ATC) has profiled a number of Point of Use (PoU) Water Treatment Technologies to guide uptake and promotion. These Include the Three Pitcher filter, Solar Disinfection, Tiva Water filter, Spout filter, Sawyer filter, Ceramic filter, Life Straw filters, Biosand filter and Chlorine dispenser among others.
